An extension to Sutherland Building

The design and construction of a new high education building and associated external works on the city campus west estate. The new building is to be constructed as an extension to Sutherland Building which is a grade 2 listed building in the heart of the university city campus, the building created new architecture studios and an atrium space to provide a connection to the existing building.

The extension was designed to be as carbon neutral as possible. Natural ventilation was the preferred method of ventilation along with highly efficient underfloor heating fed from an air source heat pump. The extension and existing areas of the building had LED lighting and Dali light controls fitted throughout.

Extensive enabling works had to be carried out prior to the main works commencing. With the entire existing boiler house having to be demolished for the new extension to be built. This involved siting a temporary boiler house and running over 400m of temporary pipework. The existing back up generators and main electrical board also had to be relocated. A new boiler house in the new extension was then created and with a large shut down needed to move the building back off the temporary supplies onto the new permeant plant. Through the project the existing building electricity supply and heating was uninterrupted.
